Making a Duct Tape Cell Phone Pouch!

Follow these simple directions and you can make a colorful cell phone Case. Discover how my technique for making a duct tape sheet makes this craft very easy.

Age Guideline: 8 Years and Up
Time Required: 60+ minutes

The above age and time guidelines are estimates. This project can be modified to suit other ages and may take more or less time depending on your circumstances.

Before you start working on this duct tape cell phone Case, it is easiest to gather together all of the supplies. For this project you will need:

Colored Duct Tape
Carabiner
Plain Paper
Ruler
Pen
Scissors

I used 2 different colors of duct tape to make my cell phone case but you can use more or less...

Making your duct tape sheet using my method and a piece of paper is a lot easier than making a duct tape sheet without using the paper. Plus, the paper adds a little more firmness to your duct tape sheet!
To make your duct tape sheet, which is used in many duct tape crafts, start out by laying a plain piece of paper in front of you. You can use any kind of paper you want. You can even use up paper that has printing on it because the entire sheet will be covered.

Now, cut a piece of duct tape around 9-inches long. Lay this piece down along one of the 8 1/2-inch edges of the piece of paper. Cut a second piece of duct tape and lay it sligtly overlapping the first piece. Continue this until the entire side of the piece of paper is covered with duct tape.

Now we can finish the other side of the duct tape sheet...

To finish making your duct tape sheet, flip over your duct tape covered piece of paper. Cut a piece of duct tape about 11-inches long and lay it across the side edge of the piece of paper. These piece of duct tape are running the opposite direction as the first step. If you prefer, you can make them run the same direction.
Cut a second piece of duct tape about 11-inches long and lay it on the paper, slightly overlapping the first piece of tape. Continue this until the entire piece of paper is covered with duct tape.

We are now ready to start making the duct tape cell phone case...

Measure how wide your cell phone is. Also measure how thick your cell phone is. Add together the width and the thickness times 2. That is how wide you want your cell phone case to be. For example, My phone was about 2 1/2-inches wide and about 1/2 an inch thick. That means I want my cell phone case to be 3 1/2-inches wide (2 1/2 + 1/2 + 1/2).
Measure how tall your cell phone is. Multiply that by 2 and then add 1-inch to that measurement and that is how long you want to make your cell phone case. My phone is 4 1/2-inches so I want to cut my cell phone case about 10-inches long (4 1/2 x 2 + 1).

Use a ruler to mark the cutting lines on your duct tape sheet. The piece I cut from the duct tape sheet is approximately 3 1/2" x 10". Cut it out.

Cut a piece of duct tape, about 4-inches long. Cut the strip in half so you end up with 2 pieces that are each about 4" x 1".
Lay one of the pieces of tape, sticky side up, on your work surface. Lay one of the short edges of cell phone case onto the tape so it overlaps about half of the tape. Fold up the other side of the tape onto the cell phone case. Repeat this step with the other short edge of the cell phone case.

Trim any extra tape flush with the side edges of the cell phone case.

Cut a piece of duct tape about 4-inches long. Starting at one of the long sides, fold in the edge. Continue this until you have a thin, rolled strip.
Now we can attach the strap to the cell phone case...

Set your cell phone case on your work surface. Place one end of the carabiner strap, centered, overlapping the edge of the cell phone case by about an inch. Use a piece of duct tape to hold it int place.
Flip over your cell phone case. Fold over the loose end of the carabiner strap and tape in onto the case the same way you did the first end.

Now we are ready to fold the cell phone case...

Fold up the bottom of the cell phone case so that the bottom edge stops about 2-inches below the top edge. Before you tape the sides, you may want to slip your cell phone in the case to make sure it fits how you want it to.
Cut a piece of duct tape, about 8-inches long. Cut the strip in half so you end up with 2 pieces that are each about 8" x 1".

Lay your folder cell phone cover on your work surface. Lay one of the cut pieces of tape onto the side of the cell phone case. Repeat this for the other side of the cell phone case and then fold the tape over to the back of the cell phone case. This will create the pocket for your cell phone.

Trim any extra tape flush with the side edges of the cell phone case.

Good Job! Done!

  1. Lots of people every day take for granted the fact that a cell phone is there for their use whenever they need it, paying little attention to how it is stored or cared for. What is often neglected is that it can be damaged rather easily. A touch screen can become excessively scratched or even crack under repeated abuse, and a replacement screen is more costly than a protective covering or case. If your iPhone 4 case is made by a reputable manufacturer, using only high quality plastic or similar material, you will have the assurance that your phone is being protected even while it's in your pocket.
